The role

As a Saab Graduate, you will work alongside experienced engineers to deliver world leading and innovative projects.

Saab’s Graduate Program is a two year program, which offers you the opportunity to work in either; a focused program, dedicated to honing technical proficiency in a specific area, or a dynamic experience with structured rotations across two diverse teams within our organisation.

These options are carefully designed to match your unique skills, developmental aspirations, business needs, and personal preferences.

Following the successful completion of the program, you will be placed into a permanent position within the business so that you can continue the growth of your exciting new career.

The Graduate Systems Engineer’s main focus will be working within technical teams to assist in the development and sustainment of systems and products across Saab programs, working under guidance and supervision of experienced systems engineers.

Our 2026 Graduate Systems Engineering program will be comprised of the following graduate roles, based out of our Adelaide office.

Systems Engineering: design of Combat Systems for the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet, including requirements analysis, interface definition and platform & systems integration. This role would suit those studying electrical/electronics, mechanical/mechatronic or related engineering degrees.

Systems Safety Engineering: systems safety design of Combat Systems for the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet, including hazard analysis, risk assessment and developing safety cases for acceptance. This role would suit those studying electrical/electronics or related engineering degrees.

Systems Security Engineering: systems security design of Combat Systems for the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet, including risk analysis, vulnerability analysis, software assurance and vulnerability testing. This role would suit those studying software, computer science or electrical/electronic/mechatronic degrees with cyber elements.

Support Systems Engineering: support systems design of Combat Systems for the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet, including analysis tasks, specification development and documenting support system designs involving people, process and products. This role would suit those studying electrical/electronics, mechanical/mechatronic or related engineering degrees.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the system requirement definition, design, implementation, integration and test, verification and validation activities typically for low to moderate complexity, not safety critical systems components and interfaces.
  • Contribute to development of engineering artefacts and customer deliverables, including in speciality engineering domains (e.g. system security, safety, ILS, environmental)
  • Assist in developing technical documentation such as drawings and parts lists
  • Develop an understanding of the operational use of the associated system under development.
  • Produce all artefacts required for deliverables and internal reviews.
  • Participate in reviews of systems and documentation and testing as required.

I have been given quite a lot of responsibility when it comes to deliverables. Only issue is that sometimes I will be busy and have things to do and other times I will have nothing allocated to me and my Team Lead and Manager do not offer work in those periods.

I am a Graduate Software Engineer currently working within the Maritime division, I am currently working on 9LV. My day-to-day responsibilities include communicating with my immediate team about my workings on the previous day of working, and what my current objectives are, and achieving those objectives. These objectives primarily include programming, software documentation and problem analysis.

Pros and cons of working at Saab Australia

Pros

  • Numerous opportunities to network with fellow graduates and team members, welcoming team members, good work-life balance, good work culture, flexible working arrangements, interesting projects, great mentoring program

  • Learning about business strategies and processes that are used on projects. This is drastically different to taught content from university course work. Graduate school development. This has taught me professional skills to be used in workplaces. I think these skills are very important because they can be used universally in all workplace environments. Meeting professionals in different fields.

  • Culture, especially the events that promote socializing outside of your own business unit. - Work and teams are supportive of each other and promote learning deeply in your area; but also promote broadening skills and developing to understand broader picture of projects. Work is valuable and as a graduate, I feel like I contribute to the work being done overall in the business. The ability to work my own hours (within reason) has greatly allowed me to develop a proper work-life balance that has allowed for objectively improved health since finishing university.

  • The culture at SAAB is great. In an organisation that is expanding quite quickly, It's great to see the investment and care for its employees. Monthly department meetings to hear what is happening across the company is also great insight, in particular for graduate engineers.

  • Autonomy and not micromanaged. Get to do things on my own and ask questions when I need.

Cons

    • Lack of documentation for procedures. A lot of the times I have found myself stuck on a question or task because there are no instructions/guidelines that I can refer to.

    • Some tools are counterintuitive to use, but they have trainings to learn these tools appropriately.

    • I can't answer this, haven't experienced anything that can be described as the worst thing

    • Lack of processes/not fully implemented and practised processes.

    • Developing larger standardised processes within the company/
