A Graduate’s Journey: Learning, Growing, and Thriving in HWL Ebsworth Lawyers

6.00 AM

My alarm goes off. I'm pressing snooze a couple of times before I'll be able to come out from under my doona.

6.30 AM

I'm finally ready to get up for the day. I get up and go about my business around my housemate who is watching ABC News and eating his Weet-Bix. On my housemate's recommendation, it's a blue tie today.

7.15 AM

I'm catching my trusty bus to work. I've got my sudoku book as the perfect accompaniment (even though I will probably end up just using my phone for the entire ride).

8.00 AM

I reach the familiar Collins Arch! The sun is coming out, and my head is feeling calm and clear ahead of a busy day.

8.15 AM

After slowly setting down my belongings at my desk, I coerce some colleagues to come to the coffee machine with me. I get their life updates whilst we wait for the machine to churn out our lattes (full cream milk).

8.30 AM

Time to get started. I'm reviewing my Outlook and writing out my plan of tasks for the day (though they are bound to change). For now, the agenda looks like:

  1. Writing two letters of demand
  2. Research to find analogous cases to a current family business / estates matter we are running
  3. Calling the County Court to confirm details for an upcoming mediation we have tomorrow, and then calling the client to update them with the details
  4. We need to file a client's affidavit by the end of the day in the Federal Court - I need to have the documents ready for them to sign the affidavit
  5. The other side from a recent trial has sent through a list of exhibits that were tendered during the trial - they want our agreement, and I need to provide that confirmation

work time

9.00 AM

Book Club. Our Special Counsel runs a quick 10-minute session every week where we chat about a Civil Procedure rule. Today is about summary judgments and within minutes I feel like an expert.

10.00 AM

Woah - that went fast. I've managed to get through the first three tasks on my list, but it's time to stretch the legs for a bit. The younger lawyers in the Litigation Team have a calendar invite each week to walk to a new café for a brew - as you can imagine, there are quite a few options in the Melbourne CBD…

10.20 AM

Back to work. I call a client to confirm that we have the affidavit ready for her to sign, and book in a time for the early afternoon where one of our lawyers can witness her signing the affidavit.

One of the Partners has called me over and asked me to complete a brief urgent memo for them. The memo goes straight to the top of my priority list. I also take the opportunity to quickly ask the Partner if they had any feedback on the letter of demand I prepared for them. They were happy with the work but had some useful pointers on where I could improve for next time.

12.15 PM

I resist the urge to take lunch prior to my friends' normal time of 1.00 PM. I prepare a cup of tea and satisfy my hunger with 5 Savoy's kitchen snacks.

1.00 PM

Lunch time. Chicken kiev with broccolini and carrots from last night - awesome. Friends and I sit in the courtyard most days to yarn about very unserious things. Within minutes we have forgotten about work and are estimating how far up we could climb, without protection, the building across the street.

1.45 PM

Back to work. I re-set my list as I need to make sure everything that is urgent today is done, and a few further emails have popped through. I sit in on the meeting for our client to sign their affidavit, and attend to the further questions they have asked about the status of their case.

meeting

2.17 PM

A humorous phone call with a client has me grinning from ear-to-ear. I lean over my desk to share with a colleague.

3.00 PM

One of the associates got engaged on the weekend! Cake to celebrate them!

5.00 PM

It is time to bid adieu to work. I go down to the end-of-trip facilities, get changed out of my work clothes and take a shower.

6.00 PM

I meet up with some friends who also happen to work in the Melbourne CBD. We have scoped out some close places that do happy hour specials between 6.00 - 7.00 PM. Nice to sip on an averagely priced drink for once! There also happens to be a deal on the lamb ragu, and I am starving - massive win.

8.20 PM

I'm walking through the recreation centre where I play social futsal. It's been a long day so I need to let off some steam.

9.00 PM

I'm walking out of the recreation centre, completely demoralised after my social futsal team lost 14-0. RIP.

9.45 PM

Perhaps my favourite part of the night - debriefing with my two lovely best friends/housemates. One works in urban planning, and the other in data; between us, we have varied and diverse anecdotes that put grins on all of our faces. The spy thriller we put on waits patiently in the background for us to all finish speaking.

10.15 PM

I tell my housemates I love them, and jump on my bed exhausted. However, in a few hours' time I know I'll be excited to start a brand new day.
