The opportunity

ASIO is looking for technical specialists to advance our physical and technical access teams. As a Technical Field Operator, you will provide technical and tradecraft expertise for the planning, delivery and support of in-field technical operations, which are often conducted at short notice or during irregular hours. 

Technical Field Operators are primarily charged with undertaking the overt and covert deployment of technical capabilities, and the collection of intelligence using technically derived means. 

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.

This role may attract an additional technical skills allowance of up to 10% of base salary

Role responsibilities

As a Technical Field Operator in ASIO, you will:

  • Contribute to the development of technical capabilities to meet the intelligence requirements.
  • Pending attainment of field operational qualifications, assist or perform the in-field technical deployments of capabilities. 
  • Provide support and maintenance for technical capabilities through its operational lifecycle.
  • Undertake or contribute to the development of capabilities to deliver leveraged and custom solutions.
  • Maintain awareness of development in technologies impacting ASIO technical operations and advise of its impact or the opportunities it presents.
  • Attain or maintain capability expertise in one or more technical capability streams.

What you will bring

We value practical skills and life experiences just as highly as formal qualifications and likewise value both breadth and depth of technical knowledge. We provide specialist training to our staff to equip them 
for their role. 

The successful candidates may have experience and/or qualifications in one or more of the following:

  • Construction or trade - electrical, carpentry or builder.
  • Security - CCTV, security alarms, electronics or locksmith.
  • Fabrication – machinist or composites.
  • Automotive - mechanic, panel beater or auto electrician.
  • Media - photography, videography or audio technician.
  • Telecommunications/ICT/wireless – cellular and non-cellular network or systems technician.

In addition to the above skills, the following attributes are desirable:

  • Experience working as part of a close-knit team of trades and technical specialists, including 
  • assisting other trades and functions as required.
  • Adaptability and resilience in a complex and evolving environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal teamwork and communication (both written and oral) skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable in response to changing situations and priorities.
  • Proactive and able to take initiative to improve processes and procedures.
  • Remains calm under pressure and able to make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Able to learn quickly and stay up-to-date with new technologies, techniques, and procedures.
  • High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy and precision in all aspects of works

These positions are located in Canberra and Sydney. Relocation assistance is provided to successful candidates where required.

Employment conditions

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
