Software Engineer at Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO)
Bachelor of Information Technology
What's your job about?
As a Software Engineer I’m responsible for developing and maintaining software used for intelligence operations. My daily work is very typical of a Software Engineer, it includes writing and reviewing code, deployment and configuration of software and responding to any issues. Despite the typical responsibilities, my work is very interesting, applying my technical skills to an intriguing domain where we catch spies and stop terrorists.
What's your background?
I grew up in regional Victoria in a Sikh family. I’ve always loved technology. I often reminisce about the days I played Crash Bandicoot on the PlayStation. I have spent countless hours playing games with my siblings and eventually tinkering with building software and games myself. Growing up in a town that wasn’t culturally diverse, I have always stood out and faced the challenges that brings. Those experiences, in conjunction with my principles to serve the community, have always pushed me to strive for roles where I can serve and represent. I was in my final year of university when I first heard about ASIO, and I knew instantly that’s where I wanted to work. It was the perfect blend of technology and serving the community that I was looking for. After a 12-month recruitment process and multiple interviews, I made it through! I have been in my role for a few years now and I absolutely have no regrets!
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Yes! And no. There is an expected level of technical skill required for my specific job. In my role, the technical skills I learnt at university are important, but being eager to learn, always curious, and able to work with others are equally important. My manager and colleagues are always supportive of me developing new skills and providing the opportunities and support to enable me to grow and succeed.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The coolest thing about my job is using my skills to build technologies that contribute to our mission of protecting Australia and Australians. We’re exposed to a wide variety of technologies and also see those technologies used in creative and innovative ways. It's a very fulfilling job. Even if I’ve had a challenging day, I can go home knowing that I’m making a difference and contributing to something bigger than myself.
What are the limitations of your job?
Working in a security environment does have its challenges. Certain flexible working arrangements such as working from home are limited, although this is also a good thing as I can’t take work home. We are expected to be very open and honest about our personal lives, particularly while going through the Top Secret security clearance process. Additionally, given the important role we have, we are limited in what we can talk about to family and friends.
